Thursday Thoughts: Faith

In many ways faith is a daily process.  We believe in many things and act on them because of faith.  I know there are many things that I have not experienced and many places that I have not seen.  Because I have not seen them doesn’t mean that I don’t believe that these things are real.  In fact I don’t even question them because of faith.  There is much evidence of their existence and I have faith in the source of the evidence.  This is an easy process for us to accept in our day-to-day life so why do some have trouble with their faith in their spiritual life.  I don’t only mean that they don’t have faith but that many don’t have enough faith to motivate them to obey God’s instructions.

God is the creator of life, He is the giver of salvation and Christ is the solution to sin.  All we need is enough faith to respond to His invitation.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV)

So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Hebrews 9:28 (NKJV)

Faith according to Webster’s Expanded Dictionary is “belief; trust; confidence; conviction in regard to religion; system of religious beliefs”.  In the book of Hebrews we are told that faith makes what we hope for as though they were present realities and that it is the evidence or convincing proof of things not seen.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)

Later in the Hebrews 11 we are told that it is not possible to please God without faith. Faith then becomes very important to all who want to be pleasing to God and go to heaven.  Let us consider some things about Hebrew 11:6 that will hopefully help us grow in our faith.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

The idea of being without faith is a state of being without hope.  This would be a sad place to be.  Life is hard enough as it is but to be without hope would make it almost unbearable.  Hope lets us go through many difficult times.  It gives us energy to do many things that we might otherwise give up on.  This hope is accomplished through faith that God is trustworthy and can strengthen us, comfort us, guide us and give us expectation of the things that will come.  If I want to have a relationship with God I will need to have faith in Him and let Him sustain me.

If we are to have faith in God we must first believe that He is.  Too many people today are denying that there is a God and rely on themselves to direct their own way.  We are told that the creation testifies of God. (Rom. 1:20)  The creation is one of the evidences that God exists.  We can have no expectation of heaven if we don’t believe that there is a God.  This may be why so many people live with so much despair.  If we are to please God we must believe that He is.

Having faith in God and believing that He is, is having faith or confidence that He is the rewarder of the promises He has made.  I can make all kinds of promises but if I do not have the ability to fulfill those promises then, what good are my promises?  God is the creator of all things and has all power over all things.  He raised Christ from the dead and He became the firstfruits of those who are asleep. (1 Cor. 15:20)  If God raised Christ and has promised to raise us, we can have faith that He can do what He has promised because He raised Christ from the dead.

He is not the rewarder of just anyone but the rewarder of those that diligently seek him.  The faith that we have in God should produce thankfulness for all that God has done for us and cause us to want to please Him in the way we live our lives.  We do this by diligently seeking Him.  We should open up our Bibles and learn more about how we can please Him.  We will soon understand that God rewards those who seek Him.

The Bible tells us that it is impossible to please God without faith.  Faith allows us to see God’s goodness and believe that He has the ability to keep His promises and motivates us to seek Him with all of our being.  We are filled with hope and expectation of heaven.  Believing only that there is a God is not enough.  We must have faith that is strong enough to produce action to seek Him.  How is your faith?
