From the Heart: Take Courage, It Is I

Read Matthew 14:22-33

“Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

Courage is like a kite, a contrary wind causes it to rise.

Courage is not the absence of fear. I’ve heard it said that courage is fear that’s said its prayers. Being a Christian doesn’t guarantee courage nor does it free us from all our anxious feelings. It does give us the Spirit of God in his holy word. When we rely on Him through faith it makes our dread and apprehension lose their paralyzing power.

I read recently that well-known pianist and composer, Don Wyrtzen appears poised and confident when he sits at his piano before large audiences. But he said he actually becomes very anxious at times and when he feels an anxiety attack coming on he would sing softly to himself, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee.”

Now I’m not saying that instantly the Lord waves a magic wand and the anxiety goes away, but I have experienced calmness and peace in times of anxiety when I rely on the Lord.

In our scripture reading, the terror-stricken disciples saw Jesus coming toward them walking on the water and they didn’t quite know what was really happening. Was it a ghost or something even more terrifying? Can you imagine the relief they felt when Jesus said, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

You see, Jesus was more powerful than the fear producing circumstances. He could quiet a violent storm (Mk 4:39). He could bring healing to the body and mind (Mt 8:14-15). And my friends He could even conquer death (John 11:43-44). All by the Power of His Word.

Are you fearful? Trust Jesus, study His Word and rely on our God. He can give you that peace that passes all understanding that the apostle Paul talked about if you will simply “Trust & Obey.”

PRAYER:

Holy Father, the giver of all good and precious gifts, all glory and honor be unto you now and forever. Thank you Father for your Holy Word, the Bible and for the peace we can find there in. May we always rely on You and the Holy Spirit that the Lord Jesus sent to us to guide us into all truth. We thank you Father for the gift of your perfect Son who was willing to take away our sins by going to the cross and being our sacrifice. Thank you Lord Jesus for your courage in time of fear, for without it we would be without hope.

In Jesus Holy Name, Amen
