From the Heart: Sin Hurts God

Read 2 Sam.12:1-15

David, king over all Israel was a just and upright man; a servant of God. It is evident that God loved David with a special love. David had proven himself on many occasions to be faithful. He had a love and trust in God that was beyond reproach. Because of his trust in God he was able to kill Goliath, the Philistine giant with a sling and a river rock. Because of his love and respect for God he would not harm King Saul even though Saul was trying to kill him.┬áDavid had proven over and over that he loved and trusted in God, the King Supreme over Israel. David was so special that he was called a man after God’s own heart.

But my friends, none of us are perfect, not even David. When he saw this beautiful woman, completely nude, taking a bath on the top of a building not far from him, he was consumed with desire. It seemed that at that moment nothing else mattered. He was the king and he had to have her. And to make matters worse, when she became pregnant he tried to trick her husband into thinking it was his child. When that didn’t work he had┬áhim placed in front of the battle line knowing that he would be killed.

The truth is that we are all special to God. You see, He created us in his image, after his likeness and He knows us intimately. He knows our beginning and our end and he allows us to stumble and fall. Because he wants us to love him back. That’s why he gave us free will. You see, we must decide to love and obey God, otherwise there would be no need for love.

It seems that David, just like us sometimes, forgot about Satan and his mighty power. Satan also knows us. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses. And he knows what and when to tempt us. God understands that and that’s why he sent His Son to redeem our souls from Satan.

David’s sin hurt a lot of people. It hurt Bathsheba, her husband Uriah, their unborn child and many others but the one that was hurt the most was God himself. In Psalm 51, when David was making his prayerful plea to God for forgiveness he said in verse (4) “Against You, You only have I sinned and my sin is ever before me.” David now understood that he had hurt the God that he loved and although God could forgive him, he could never forget the harm he had caused and the consequences that would follow.

Our most gracious and loving heavenly Father, I do humbly come to you today knowing that you are the all-wise and almighty God, creator of all things, the giver and sustainer of all life, the one who made us and gave us life. And Father I come acknowledging to You that I too am a sinner. That I’ve caused hurt and disappointment to You and I pray for your forgiveness. That You will blot our all my sins and remember them no more. And I understand Father that there are no big or little sins in your sight, they are all simply SINS. So Father, we all need your guidance and your protection day by day that we might be able to overcome our weaknesses and remain faithful to You. Thank You Father for sending Jesus, your Son and our Savior that He might take away our sins and make us clean once again that we could have eternal life with You.

In Jesus Holy Name, Amen!
