From the Heart: Looking Beyond The Unknown

Read Heb. 11:8-19

v. 8 – By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Life is full of uncertainties. We don’t know what the next 24 hours will bring. It’s an uncharted course that may include blessings of great joy or heartbreaking loss. Because the future is unknown, it sometimes fills us with fear, making each new day a struggle. It sometimes keeps us from doing things that we know God wants us to do.

Fear of the unknown has often kept man from moving forward. In the early Middle Ages, for example, it was said that the European sailors would not sail very far south. They believed that the middle of the earth was ringed with fire, because the farther south they traveled the hotter it became. The same kind of fear kept men from exploring the Atlantic Ocean. A chart that was drawn sometime in the Middle Ages has a painting of a ship turning back into the Mediterranean Sea from the Straits of Gibraltar. Above it appears the Latin phrase, Ne Plus Ultra, which means “Nothing more beyond.”

Fear of the unknown kept explorers from crossing the Atlantic until Columbus and Ponce de Leon decided to test the horizon.

Fear of the unknown may keep us from making spiritual progress as well. We might be afraid of what our neighbor will say if we witness to him about Christ. We might not be sure of how the students will respond if we try to teach them what the Bible says about salvation. And there might be times when young hearts need to express their past struggles and their journey of life to others, to let them know that with the help of our Almighty God, we can all overcome the sin in our lives and live for Christ.

Let us hold fast to the Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, that we might overcome our innermost fears and simply trust in God.

Like Abraham, who left his homeland for an unknown destination, we can overcome uncertainty by trusting God. He sees beyond the unknown.

All-wise and almighty Heavenly Father, I humbly come to you today, thanking You for your Holy Word. A record that shows us how loving and patient you are with us. For all too often we let our fears take control of our actions and do not do that which we know we should. And Father I pray that you will continue to help and guide us in our efforts to serve You while helping others. And Father I pray that you will direct our hearts and minds and keep us from hindering others that might be doing their best to be faithful to You as they journey down the road of life. Help us Father to always be aware of our influence. It could be the only Bible that some people will read.

In Jesus Holy Name! Amen
