From the Heart: Looking Back

READ Psalm 103:1-5

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.

Have you ever driven up a mountain side and stopped near the top and looked back?

I remember diving from Phoenix to Flagstaff, Arizona. I had some time to kill so I took the old road instead of the interstate. Near the top there is a place to pull off the road and look back down the mountain. The first time I made that trip I stopped there and looked back. It had been a scary trip at times, with pockets of fog. I remember the winding road that zig-zagged up the mountain. How I had to be careful not to run off the road. It required my full attention.

When I stopped and looked back from where I had come, it now seemed clearer, less treacherous, even the fog bank through which I had inched my way seemed clearer. What a sight! Looking at God’s handy-work was awesome.

Sometimes we as Christians need to stop along life’s road and look back. Although it might have been winding and steep, we can see how God directed us by His grace and faithfulness.

In Deut. 5:15, we see how the Lord can bring deliverance. In Deut. 8:2, we see how He can lead us. In Deut. 32:7-12, we see the blessings he has bestowed on His children. In Deut. 11:2-7, we see the victories He has won. And in Josh. 23:14, we see the encouragement God freely gave.

On our road of life we face many difficulties and often forget God’s faithfulness. We see only the detours and dangers in our path. However, if we will look back, we can see the joy of victory, the challenge of the climb, and the presence of our “traveling companion.”  He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. Take courage my friends. The one who brought you this far will lead you safely home.

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to an all-knowing God.”

Shall not He who lead me safely

Through the footsteps of this day

Lead with equal understanding

All along my future way?

All-wise and all-powerful heavenly Father, what an awesome God you are. You formed us in our mother’s womb and breathed life into fragile bodies. You have given us wealth beyond our daily needs and you have trusted us to use it wisely. May we always consider your gifts to be our blessings and our responsibility. Help us Lord to be able to look back at our road of life and give you thanks for our many blessings. Help us Father to see more joy in helping others, than helping ourselves. Bless us with the talents to bring others to the Lord by the way we live our lives. Thank You Father for all our blessings but thank You most of all for Jesus. The one who freely gave His life that we might live eternally, in that heavenly home prepared for all your children.

In Jesus Holy Name: AMEN!
