From the Heart: Lessons From Noah

Read Genesis 6 thru 9

Ch. 6:8,9… Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord, and he was righteous, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

In other words, he was special to God!

You know, once in a while a man comes along who is not afraid to obey God; one who has a tender heart and a righteous mind. That was Noah.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to be Noah? He lived in a culture that was corrupted by immorality and violence. According to the scriptures, the earth was literally full of it. People’s lives had become so reprehensible that God regretted having created them. So much so that he decided to remove every living thing from the face of the earth.

Like a man clearing the table with the back of his hand. He wiped it all away. Can you imagine? God was hurt and disappointed. But on the way to starting over again, the Lord looked at Noah. His life was faithful. In the middle of all this immorality and violence, he found favor in the eyes of God.

There are many lessons we could find in the life of Noah and God’s compassion and love for this righteous man. Here are a few thoughts to consider:

  • Don’t miss the boat!
  • Remember, we are all in the same boat.
  • Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
  • Stay fit. When you are old, God may still ask you to do something really big!
  • Don’t listen to the grumblers; just get on with the job at hand.
  • Build your future on high ground.
  • For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.
  • Speed isn’t always an advantage. The sloths were on board with the cheetahs.
  • When you’re stressed, float awhile.
  • Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
  • “No matter the storm, when you are with God, there is always a rainbow waiting!”

Note: These thoughts did not originate with me but copied from another but I’m sure we can all find one or more that fits.

I wonder what all those people were thinking when the rain started. They hadn’t seen rain before. Now they are watching it rain day after day and the water is rising around them. Noah had preached to them for years. If only they had listened and repented of their wicked ways. But now the door to the Ark is closed;, God shut the door and locked it. It was too late.

Can you imagine them crying for help, trying to cling to the side of the Ark as the water covered the earth? Then thinking, if only I had listened to Noah.

Our God is patient but he warns us just as he did in the days of Noah that there will be a day of judgment. He offers salvation to everyone but He sets the standard for his gift. We must come to know Jesus as the Son of God, repent of our sins and obey the Word of God by being baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. Then live a devoted life to Christ our Redeemer. Don’t wait until the rain starts!

Holy Father, All Wise God, Creator of Heaven and Earth; I humbly come to you today in prayer praising you for your grace and mercy. Knowing that you loved us even before we were born. That you desire good for us always and not evil. Help us Father to look to You, to read and study your Word, the Bible. And Father, I remember that Jesus said that He was sending the Holy Spirit to guide us into All Truth. Help us Father to see that truth and obey your words before the rain begins.

In Jesus Holy Name, Amen!
