From the Heart: Giving Thanks

Read Psalms 136:1-9

v.2 – Give thanks to the God of gods! — v.5 – To Him who by wisdom made the heavens!

Last week my family and I celebrated “Thanksgiving Day.” My wife had recently fallen and broke her hip so one of my sons and his wonderful wife agreed to provide all the food. They bought it, cooked it and brought it to our house so the whole family could enjoy the food together. It was a truly wonderful day of family unity and love. A great day to give thanks. I could never thank Randy and Julia enough for their generosity, hard work and most of all for their love.

The wisdom of God is never more evident than in our own families. You see, God gave us good families to help us appreciate His Family. You see, all Christians are part of the family of God.

I saw a bumper sticker one time that read: Did you thank a green plant today? Plants of course, are essential to life. By the process of photosynthesis they produce oxygen. They also supply us with food, fuel, drugs, and a host of building and industrial materials. Was that bumper sticker suggesting that because we depend so heavily on plants we should thank them for our blessings? Probably so.

All the marvels of creation should fill our hearts with gratitude, but always to the Creator. In his devotional book My Utmost For His Highest, Oswald Chambers wrote,

“Learn to associate ideas worthy of God with all that happens in nature — the sunrises and sunsets, the sun and the stars, the changing seasons — and your imagination will never be at the mercy of your impulses but will always be at the service of God.”

And service is heartfelt thanksgiving to the One who brought everything into existence, and sustains our world by his mighty power.

Be aware of creation. The sun reminds us of God’s warmth and love. The vastness of space speaks to His infiniteness. The sunrise and sunset reveal the beauty and splendor of His Divine nature. Truly, this should keep us praising the One who not only gives us physical life but who also provides eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

That bumper sticker should have read: “Did you thank God today?”

It is good to worship God in nature, if it leads us to worship the God of nature.

Holy Father, as I come to You in prayer at this time my heart is full of awe for your greatness. When I consider your power, your wisdom and your love for all your creation, I am filled with wonder. In the very beginning of time You created this world as we know it and it was perfect. You proclaimed that it was very good. And I know from reading your Holy Scriptures that one day You will make All Things New, and it will again be “very good!” Thank You Father for loving us and for providing a perfect sacrifice for us that we might be saved from our sins. I can not imagine how hard it was for You to allow your Son to suffer and die that cruel death on that cross so we could be forgiven and made complete again. May every day be a day of THANKSGIVING, to You and our Savior Jesus Christ! For it’s through Him that I pray this prayer! AMEN!
