From the Heart: Families

And if one member suffers, all suffer with it; and if one member is honored all rejoice with it.

1 Corinthians 12:26

I’m sure we all know people that are suffering and it is good that we show compassion, that we pray for them and do whatever we can to help them. However, in the passage above Paul is talking about the body of Christ, “The Family of God.”

When we become a child of God we become a member of God’s family. And this gives us a very special kinship with other children of God. Backing up to verse 12, Paul describes the body as having many members. All of which are needed to make the body complete. All members are important. The grounds keeper and the floor sweeper are just as important in the eyes of God as the minister that preaches on Sunday morning. This makes us all special in the eyes of God.

At the church where I attend we are often called a local family of God. Now we are not the only family of God but according to the pattern set forth in the New Testament we are to be a part of a local family of God. This gives us many benefits that we otherwise would not have. When one family member is in need others are there to help. When a family member has reason to rejoice we all rejoice with him.

God’s wisdom is so far above us that it is beyond our comprehension. He gave us human families that we might better understand and appreciate His family. This is never more evident than when we lose one of our human family members, a mother, a father, a child, a brother, or sister. And then we look up and several members of our spiritual family are there to lend their support. On the surface it seems like such a small thing but I can tell you first hand that love and support is a wonderful thing.

Look around in your church family. Is there a hand that needs holding? Does a new mother need a meal provided? Is there an elderly person that could use a cheerful visit or a home repair? Is your love a love in action that can bring joy to your brother or sister in Christ? Isn’t that what families are for?

It’s been said “Our job is not to see through one another, but to see one another through.”

All wise and wonderful Heavenly Father; I humbly come to You in prayer thanking You for your greatness displayed on the pages of your Book. That we as your family might come to know you and love and appreciate You, the only True and Living God. Father, we need your guidance day by day and your forgiveness alone the way. May we always strive to be a vital part of your heavenly family. In Jesus Holy Name, AMEN!
