From the Heart: Are You Packed & Ready?

Read 1 Cor. 15:51-58

For those of you that don’t know, my wife and I are from Middle Tennessee. We still have family and friends there. This past Monday I went to visit a friend of mine. She had been battling cancer for a year or more and was determined to do all she could to get well. My sister and I and several of her family members spent most of the day with her Monday. Her physical condition had deteriorated and she was in and out of consciousness. She had labored hard to stay but when she realized the Lord was calling her home, she was packed and ready. Tuesday morning about 10:30 she passed away, into that heavenly realm, where the Lord had prepared her heavenly home.

Someday we will all be called to make that journey. We do not know whether it will be when we die or when the Lord returns. But our departure is certain. Like getting ready for any journey, we should think about the place where we are going and how we can prepare for the move.

In verse 58 of our text above, Paul advised believers to be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” By doing this we will be packing for heaven.

I read an article that was published some time ago in the “Workstyle Magazine” that emphasized the importance of getting ready for a trip beforehand. It gave guidelines on carrying the right amount of clothing, selecting the kind you will need, and being prepared for changes in the weather. It gave specific directions for packing a suitcase by rolling garments into logs, folding sweaters a certain way, and properly packing shirts and dresses. The article suggested that a person who is going on a journey should spend quality time in preparation. If he does, he will be ready to go.

There are some parallels in the Christian’s preparation for that final journey to heaven. We all know that this life is temporary and we will all be spending eternity somewhere. Just as you would plan and prepare for a vacation trip, we should plan and prepare for our heavenly trip.

I heard a story some time ago about a young mother who was trying to explain to her five year old daughter about her daddy’s death. and she said, honey, the Lord called for daddy and some day he will call for you and me. The little girl looked at her mother with big sad eyes and she said, “When Mommy?” When is the Lord going to call for you and me? Her mother said, “I don’t know honey, nobody knows when.” The little girl said, Oh, Mommy, if we don’t know when, we might not be ready, “Don’t You Think We Ought To Start Packing!”

It has been said, that Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, how truly great you are. You have blessed us with many blessings here on earth but our greatest blessing is eternal life in heaven. A perfect place with no more sorrow, no death and no decay. Help us Father to be packed and ready when we hear Your Call!  — In Jesus Holy Name, Amen
