From the Heart: Another Comforter

I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter to be with you forever – *the Spirit of Truth. The world can not accept him, because it neither sees him nor know him. But you know him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

John 14:16-17

I was reading one of my short stories recently and it talked about a young theology student who was writing a term paper about confession of sins. This young man was like me, he couldn’t type very well. When he typed the phrase “He takes away our guilt” he accidentally hit “q” instead of the “g”. This made the phrase read He takes away our “quilt.” Not catching his error he turned in his paper to his professor. When his paper was returned the student grinned as he read the marginal note the professor left. It said “never fear little one, you’ll never freeze, because God gave us a comforter.”

Using his keen wit, the professor had conveyed a marvelous truth. Jesus said that the Father would send the Comforter to abide with us always. In Acts 2:1-4, we see the fulfillment of this promise. And ever since that historic day, the Holy Spirit has been faithfully carrying on His work in the lives of Christians everywhere.

If you are unsure what role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives today, here are just a few of his activities:

  • He guides us into all truth, (John 16:13)
  • He assures us we are God’s children, (Rom. 8:16)
  • He helps us pray, (Rom. 8:26)
  • He transforms us into the image of Christ, (2 Cor. 3:18)
  • He strengthens us, (Eph. 3:16)

Our response should be to learn all we can about Christ and the Holy Spirit he delivered unto us, and to put into action the things we learn. The purpose of the Holy Spirit has always been to glorify Christ, never to call attention to himself.

PRAYER:

Thank you, Father, for our Comforter. Please help us never to grieve or quench Him. We can face each day with confidence because He has blessed us with his presence and his ministry in our lives. Help us to remember also, Father; “The Christian’s HEART is the Holy Spirit’s HOME.” In Jesus Holy Name, Amen!
