From the Heart: Abba Father

Read Gal. 4:1-7

v.6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

For years I read over that verse never stopping to think what it really meant.  It is a word that was used by children in the Aramaic speaking world of Jesus’ day indicating childlike trust. When we translate it into the language of our day, it would be like saying “Papa or Daddy”. Bible scholar, W. E. Vine suggests that adding Father to the phrase expresses intelligent apprehension of the relationship. But I feel sure that the two together express the love and intelligent confidence of the child.

My wife and I have raised five wonderful sons. One of which died in an auto accident back in 1997. We still miss him but we are proud of our grandson and now our great-grandson that he left behind. Our other four sons have long since grown up, three of which now have families of their own. All together we have nine grandchildren and our little great one. For some reason all of them have decided to call us Nana and Papa. Now I still have a busy work life but I can confess that I’m not too busy to hear from my children or my children’s children. And when I hear them say “Papa, I love you”, well, my heart kinda melts. All you parents know what I’m talking about. It’s a special relationship built on unconditional love and hope for their future.

We can be sure that God, like earthly fathers, loves to hear the call of His children. Therefore, the one who has put their faith in Jesus Christ and become a child of God can always turn heavenward and ask for the help of their heavenly Father at any time. What a great privilege that is. It doesn’t matter if we are broken-hearted or happy as can be. The phone line to God’s home is always available. You will never get  a busy signal. He will encourage you when you are happy and comfort you when you are sad. Just call Him in prayer and say, “Abba Father” please hear my voice. I love You.

God’s unseen presence comforts me,

I know He’s always near;

And when life’s storms besiege my soul,

He says, “My child, don’t fear.”

Holy Father, what an awesome privilege it is to be able to talk with you any time, any place and know that you will hear us. Father, sometimes we get caught up in the cares of this life and we forget to call. So Father touch our hearts and our minds and give us that confidence that we need to draw near unto you. Increase our faith, our love and our understanding, knowing that you are just a prayer away.

In Jesus Holy Name, Amen!
